The Providence Center is committed to the health and safety of Rhode Island communities, and a unique partnership with police departments across the state makes that happen. Beginning in Providence in 2012, the program now has placed clinicians in police departments in Providence, Warwick, West Warwick, and a coalition of six Washington County communities.
Clinicians ride along with police officers to respond to individuals in psychiatric or substance use crises. Working together to address these crises ensures that people in need get the right amount of care. On the scene, the clinician de-escalates the situation conducts a clinical assessment on-site to arrive at the most appropriate recommendation for their care and safety. In many cases, a referral to The Providence Center's Crisis Stabilization Unit, a hospital or other treatment facility provides a more effective alternative solution. In addition to their day-to-day duties, the clinicians bring behavioral health knowledge and training to their respective departments. "The partnership has been positive for all. The Providence Center clinicians are able to connect people who need it most to treatment, and the officers gain a greater understanding about how to deal with people in a mental health or substance use crisis and avoid unnecessary arrests," said Colonel Hugh T. Clements, Jr., Chief of Police.

Finding Hope: Guidance for Supporting Those At Risk, is a 75-minute presentation that provides in-depth, practical information for those supporting someone with lived experience. In the context of this program, "lived experience" refers to individuals who have made a suicide attempt and/or experience suicidal thoughts. This program offers education and resources on the process of recovery after a suicidal crisis, warning signs to look out for, planning for safety, and crisis response. It also addresses the different treatment levels in the realm of mental health, and how participants can practice self-care as they support someone in their lives at risk for suicide. This program is offered by trained presenters through AFSP's chapters and is available for communities virtually and in-person. The target audience for this program is loved ones and supporters of those with lived experience, and community members interested in a more in-depth education program.

AFSP partners with organizations to provide a customized program website/platform, which allows individual users to communicate with the program counselor to ask questions and receive recommendations and support for connecting to available resources and services.

Crisis interventions are best conducted by trained and credentialed crisis intervention practitioners. Crisis intervention is not intended to provide psychotherapy or similar treatment but offers a short-term intervention to help responders receive social support, stabilization, assistance, and resources for extended care when necessary.
Any person attending a group intervention always has the right to listen only and not participate. No one is ever required to speak.

The Stronger Together program is a training that educates about mental health and approaching someone presenting with mental health concerns. The program covers conceptualizations of mental health, prevalence of mental health concerns, mental health promotion, triggers to impaired mental health, signs of deteriorating mental health, and how mental health issues can interfere with functioning. The program also presents a multi-step process for approaching someone struggling with their mental health and connecting them with resources, including many examples of phrases, wording, and questions that can be used. Themes of stigma management and community building are embedded throughout the program. Program evaluation data show an increase in participant confidence in handling mental health concerns upon completion of the workshop, and participants and facilitators consistently report positive experiences using and learning from the program. National dissemination and evaluation efforts are currently underway.
Stronger Together for adults is a 2.5 hour in-person workshop or 1.5 hour self-paced online training.
Youth Stronger Together is a 2-hour interactive workshop. The program has primarily been run with youth ages 14-22, but it may be appropriate for specific individuals above 12 years old or adults who prefer to engage in a more interactive version of the Stronger Together program.

is an inter-agency collaboration among Newport Mental Health, EBCAP, CODAC, Newport Hospital and the Women's Resource Center with its primary goal, to reduce suicide in Newport County. The program uses a systematic and uniform approach to identify and treat those at risk of suicide. Newport County healthcare providers are specially trained in administering an evidence-based screening tool, the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, at each contact with those we serve. NMH providers initiate a Pathway to Safety for those individuals identified as at-risk. The Pathway to Safety delineates the course of treatment for at-risk individuals, who are given specialized suicide prevention treatment services and are closely monitored until their risk subsides.
